2025 Regents’ Cup speech and debate competition kicks off at NAU this weekend

Scholarship contest theme is “The Government and the People: The Social Contract”

WHAT:The 2025 Regents’ Cup, a tri-university speech and debate competition presented by the ݮƵ, will take place this weekend at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. The annual event celebrates free speech and civil discourse with participating student teams from Arizona State University, NAU and the University of Arizona competing in Oxford-style debate and storytelling categories. 

Forty-eight student participants will compete for the opportunity to win scholarships to support their education. First place winners earn $15,000, second place $12,000 and third place $5,000. Students spend several months preparing for the event and earn course credit at their university for their work. 

More than 50 judges from Arizona and across the nation will oversee the competition. The judges represent a diverse range of backgrounds and professions, including the business community, policymakers, academics, elected and appointed officials, and media professionals. 

Arizona’s public universities are recognized as leaders in free speech and expression by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE). This past fall, the three state universities ranked among the top 30 nationwide in the .

  • Kickoff: 7:45 – 8:30 a.m.
  • Storytelling and Oxford Round 1: 8:45 – 9:45 a.m.
  • Storytelling and Oxford Round 2: 10:15 – 11:15 a.m.
  • Lunch: 11:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
  • Oxford Quarterfinals: 1:30 – 2:45 p.m.
  • Storytelling Semifinals: 2:55 – 3:55 p.m.
  • Oxford Semifinals: 4:05 – 5:05 p.m.
  • Storytelling Finals: 5:10 – 6:05 p.m.
  • Oxford Finals: 6:15 – 7:15 p.m.
  • Awards Reception: 7:20 – 8:30 p.m.

WHERE: NAU Science and Health and Liberal Arts Buildings 

  • Science and Health Building: 700 Osborn Drive, Flagstaff
  • Liberal Arts Building: 705 S. Beaver St., Flagstaff  

PARKING: Parking is available in parking lot P8 during the tournament. Lot P8 is located directly next to the College of Education, 801 Knoles Drive, Flagstaff.
